Past Hunger Games - 68th Hunger Games - caves

The 68th annual Hunger Games took places in a network of caves and caverns, deep underground. The cornucopia was placed in the center of the largest cavern, which housed an underground lake. The most prized object in the game was light, rather than actual weapons. Many tributes were unable to get their hands on a light source, and died quickly wandering in the treacherous caves - falling into pits or being attacked by cave dwelling mutts or other tributes. The tributes who did manage to get flashlights rarely survived long because without a weapon they were easy prey for the others. Gloss, the victor from District 1, and younger brother of Cashmere (who won the games the year before), lead the career tributes. Gloss killed many of the other tributes by having the careers cause a distraction, and then sneaking up behind them to slit their throats. This backfired on the other careers when they realized, all too late, that Gloss would be able to kill them before they even knew what was happening. After Gloss took out the last two careers in his alliance, he went after the boy from District 10. Gloss killed the boy, but not before the boy bludgeoned him in the legs with his flashlight. The boy, strong from years of physical labor, hit Gloss so hard that it snapped both of his Achilles tendons. After Gloss won, he had his legs repaired, but no amount of training seemed to return him to the same speed and agility he’d had in the past, leading Katniss to remark, years later, that he wasn’t very swift. Gloss participated and died in the 3rd Quarter Quell along with his sister, at the age of 24.
